Dolfus “Dolf” – PA to SC – Contratulations

Yesterday we had one of our pups fly on Continental Airlines from Newark, NJ to Charolette, NC, then a car ride to South Carolina.  Seems our little boy made the trip just fine; arrived safely and calm.  He traveled 2 hours on a Boeing 747 Jet to meet his new family.  Thank you CONTINENTAL for taking such good care of our puppy!  Their QuickPak program is really great and the airline was super – very organized and they were prepared to care for the pup.

Wishing Dolf lots of luck! We’ll have more on Dolf after he settles and meets his new family.  He will be with children and another GSD and I am sure they will all be best of friends.

Delta Pup Starts Tracking on the Scent Pad!

Posted By on August 20, 2009

Last week when Delta was just 7 1/2 weeks old, we started my son out laying a scent pad for his new puppy, Delta.  She is a fantastic  puppy filled with enthusiasm for everything she does.  She is bright eyed, curious, confident and very nosey – which we love!  And she loves food!

Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera with me for her first experience on the scent pad, but here are some pictures of her on her second time out.  My son laid a two foot by two foot scent pad and dispersed some little pieces of meat on the pad.    Then he placed little Delta near the pad and gave her the command to “Such”.

My son stood by the pad watching anxiously to see what his little girl would do.  I told Will to just be quiet and not encourage her, but to just let her be self-motivated and find the food.  Right away she sniffed the ground and found a piece of food and that set the stage right there for success.

Delta wondered off the scent pad once and my son said nothing, just stared at the pad and in a minute Delta came back to the scent pad and began searching again for the food.  As she found a few more pieces, she began to really dig her nose in.  What a good little pup she is.

Digging in deep to find that food.

When she had found and eaten all the food on the scent pad, before she would give up searching, we picked her up and took her back to the house.   Of course when she was done, we praised her and made a big deal over her success.  My son was so proud of her and it’s so nice to see such a young boy training his dog – it is true love!

We’ll keep up this same routine to set the stage for success and have her really work her nose and make that connection of smelling the scent and finding food!  So far, so GOOD!

More on Delta’s tracking adventures later. . . .

“D” Litter – 8 Weeks Old

Posted By on August 19, 2009

Hard to believe it has been eight weeks since these pups were born.  They are  getting big and have been all around the yard now; investigating the barn, the pond, the upstairs of my house (my boys let them climb the stairs).

We have even started Delta tracking on a scent pad – so lots going on and several pups have gone to their new homes.

Having fun around the pond.

The dogs love exploring the pond.  A few have purposely gone in and some have accidently fallen in, but they don’t seem to mind a bit.

There’s just a few of the girls.  Delta is one of the other girls and my son is already training her to learn how to track.  He started her on her very first scent pad last week and she really did well, but of course, I didn’t have my camera.  So this week, we took Delta out again and seems she didn’t forget what she learned the first time she was out.

Here she is sniffing for the goodies on the scent pad.  More on Delta’s tracking progress later.

Some of the pups will be going to their new homes this week.  We miss them already!

“D” Litter Pups – Diesel Pup

Posted By on August 15, 2009

Thursday afternoon our first puppy headed home for a long trip to West Virginia.  He will be living on a farm with lots of new animal friends.    He has apparently made his best new friend, a  puppy poodle named Riot!

It has been quite an adjustment for Diesel at his new home,  for he is away from his litter mates and mother.  Riot, a little red poodle,  traveled all the way to West Virginia with Diesel to his new home.  Riot is just about 12 weeks old and is Diesel’s “Big” brother now, even though he is half the size.  But apparently size doesn’t mean much to Riot, he thinks he is as big as a GSD already.  Seems like the two have bonded and have become best of friends.   I am sure we’ll have more pictures of these two dogs together in the future.

Here is the last of their portrait shots as one whole group since one of the pups is going to a new home soon.

Here is the little gang.  I can tell t hem now just by looking at them.  Really haven’t needed collars to tell them apart.  They all have their little uniquee personalities and looks.

The past couple of days we have been experiencing a heat wave and so my kids have invited all the puppies into the house to explore and make themselves at home.  They love to lay under the woodburning stove on the cool tile.  It’s the life!

I don't know how they all fit not that they have grown so much.

They’ll all be getting their first set of shots soon and they will be getting ready to go to their new homes.  It’s  sad to see them go, yet they all need their own homes to make their place in this world!  Someone to love each and everyone of them!
