Last week when Delta was just 7 1/2 weeks old, we started my son out laying a scent pad for his new puppy, Delta. She is a fantastic puppy filled with enthusiasm for everything she does. She is bright eyed, curious, confident and very nosey – which we love! And she loves food!
Unfortunately I didn’t have my camera with me for her first experience on the scent pad, but here are some pictures of her on her second time out. My son laid a two foot by two foot scent pad and dispersed some little pieces of meat on the pad. Then he placed little Delta near the pad and gave her the command to “Such”.

My son stood by the pad watching anxiously to see what his little girl would do. I told Will to just be quiet and not encourage her, but to just let her be self-motivated and find the food. Right away she sniffed the ground and found a piece of food and that set the stage right there for success.

Searching very diligently - 8 weeks old.
Delta wondered off the scent pad once and my son said nothing, just stared at the pad and in a minute Delta came back to the scent pad and began searching again for the food. As she found a few more pieces, she began to really dig her nose in. What a good little pup she is.

Digging in deep to find that food.
When she had found and eaten all the food on the scent pad, before she would give up searching, we picked her up and took her back to the house. Of course when she was done, we praised her and made a big deal over her success. My son was so proud of her and it’s so nice to see such a young boy training his dog – it is true love!
We’ll keep up this same routine to set the stage for success and have her really work her nose and make that connection of smelling the scent and finding food! So far, so GOOD!
More on Delta’s tracking adventures later. . . .
